A couple of months ago my girlfriend and I and a couple of friends were having fun on a zip wire in a park in Coventry. We were just having a laugh, we weren’t even drinking or smoking. A couple of police officers came to us and said there had been trouble in the area recently. They asked us if we could give them our names so they “knew it was not us causing trouble” and they could cross us off their list of potential suspects. How ridiculous. I asked if it was compulsory to give our names, they said no and I did not give it to them. Although I admit it was a very mild incident, I was so angry and felt that somehow our freedom had been disturbed.

Two weeks ago, in Lewisham where I live, a group of 20 kids on bicycles were riding through the town together. They stopped on the pavement and 5 cars with about 10-15 plain clothes police officers stopped in front of them. The policemen got out of their cars, stood up there for 15 minutes and stared at the kids without saying a word. I imagine they had not committed any criminal offence since they did not get stopped and searched. It looked like pure provocation from the police.

My best friend has been struggling with work and money for years and years. He’s done so many low paid part-time jobs over the years and has never managed to get a really good job. He’s been working so hard for very little financial reward. He always struggles to pay the rent or bills. Sometimes he has to travel for a couple of hours to make £5 because he needs it for his prepay meter or food. He deems it worth it to travel for such a long time to earn so little because he has no choice. He has debt collectors bullying him on the phone all the time, he is treated with contempt by the social services and like a thief at the dole office.

Add to the mix the fact that everywhere you go there are adverts brainwashing you to buy stuff you don’t really need but you better have if you want to look cool or pull guys or girls. Add to the mix the price rises: food, heating, transport. Add to the mix the lack of job prospect for young people. Over the years the mix has become a very explosive one indeed and I don’t understand how anyone is surprised by what is happening today.

Yes, it’s very sad that businesses or private properties are being destroyed and it’s a worrying sight that some people are being put in danger, I sincerely hope no one gets hurt, mugged or burgled, even in the police camp. Yes, some people are just being opportunistic and steal stuff just because they can. Yet I think it’s a mistake to dismiss these riots as just opportunistic looting. A lot of people are fed up, it’s been simmering for too long. Now that there’s been an opportunity to express that anger, some people have decided to take it as there is very little to stop them. Let them trash the place as long as no one gets hurt, that’s what I think really. The police and the establishment have got to understand that enough is enough. I believe in business and private property but more importantly I believe in freedom, respect and a chance for everyone to have equal opportunities. And to all the people who join facebook groups supporting the police or posting comments saying that the rioters should be shot or the army brought in, I encourage them to quickly enroll with the police forces because they are probably going to need extra help tonight.

Today we’re releasing our first DVD, it is now available from the website. I’m very happy because we started working on it back in March 2010 and I think the release of it gives me closure with the “there was a night before there was a day” (my debut album) era. I am now ready to move on and get on with my next project. I would like to thank Simon who did a great job and my band and my friends and all the fans who came to support us and who might be able to see or hear themselves on this DVD. I’ve got something new in the pipeline, i’m so excited. I don’t want to tell you more right now but you will find out very soon, I promise you. So that’s it now. After the recording of my debut album I stayed in the derelict building/church I had moved into and which Matthew Adams (producer) and I used to put together the tracks for the album. I used the space to write new songs and rehearse with the band. From time to time my housemate and I put on gigs for friends and fans. This DVD features the band playing live at a house party, a band session without an audience and an interview.
This DVD includes 4 previously unreleased tracks: “I wanted to be alone”, “Birth Sex Death” , “Your Time Has Come” and “The Search Is God” as well as a lot of songs from “there was a night before there was a day”.

Hey people! Very pleased that the work on the DVD has finally come to an end. It all started in March 2010 (almost a year ago!!!) and we’re now officially finished. I wanted to release the DVD in time for Christmas but it’s taken a bit longer. I think my mistake was to believe that making a DVD would be much simpler that making an album. It’s actually twice as much work since you have sound as well as pictures. It seems obvious now that I think about it…but i’ve got a bit of a twisted mind and what seems logical to most people, is not to me.

It was a great adventure. All that filming, the parties, the gigs, the interviews… all these hours in the editing room. It was hard work but definitely fun and i enjoyed myself very much. I think we’re ending up with a great product. The DVD features footage from 3 gigs, an interview and a little surprise. The DVD is called “Everyone at Home” because it was filmed in the derelict building in London where I live/write songs/rehearse. We should have the actual DVDs ready for mid-January alongside a brand new website. Picture of the cover below. Next year is going to be exciting!!!

The LIVE ALBUM we’re going to release on the 22nd of October is receiving positive comments and reviews from people who have had a listen to it. Most of my friends and fellow musicians come to me and say it’s weird for a band at our level to release a live album. It makes business sense to me. A band like ours at this stage is unlikely to sell 3 million copies of their debut album. We’ve got a relatively small following but these people are really into our music. Therefore we need to be able to offer them more products if we want to make money. The idea is “a wide range of products to sell to a niche market”. Haha, you should see me with my big cigar in my mouth…don’t get me wrong, i’ve always hated economics and I have never studied business. I have spent the last ten years of my life playing music everyday hoping that one day people will listen to me. That’s the only thing I genuinely care about, writing and playing music, but in order to achieve that in a sustainable way, I need to put on my businessman suit from time to time.

From an artistic point of view, releasing a LIVE ALBUM makes perfect sense too. “There Was A Night Before There Was A Day” was released almost a year ago and i feel like it’s time to release new songs. What’s the point of keeping all these tracks on my hard drive? The Live album will include three previously unreleased songs (Winter Song, I Wanted To Be Alone and Birth Sex Death). Last but not least I wanted to show people what the band sound like in its raw form. How did we record the album? We just got on stage and played. The guitars, the drums, the bass, the vocals: there is no editing or dubbing, this is what we sound like when we play a gig. Yes, the sound could be crisper, yes it’s a bit rough at times. But my hope with this album is to show you people who we are in a very sincere way.
